Scientists Created Gene-Edited 'Allergy-Friendly' Beagles — but Two Dogs Cannot Answer the Biggest Questions

Bailey can curl up beside a scientist who once reacted badly to dogs without setting off the expected rash. That is a remarkable result. It is not yet proof that allergy-free dogs are ready for family life at scale.
A biotechnology company used CRISPR gene editing to switch off the gene responsible for Can f 1, the protein considered the leading dog allergen, in beagle skin cells. The edited genetic material was used in a cloning process that produced two female puppies, Bailey and Alfie, in September 2024.
The researchers reported no detectable Can f 1 in samples of the dogs' saliva and hair. In a small demonstration, company founder Matt Walker's skin reacted to extracts from other dogs but not to material from Bailey and Alfie. Walker, who has dog allergies, now lives with Bailey.
That combination—recognisable puppies, CRISPR and a deeply relatable problem—made the work instantly viral. The responsible reading is narrower. Two dogs can establish that the technical approach worked in those animals; they cannot yet establish lifelong safety, reliable benefit across the many people with dog allergies or the welfare consequences of producing such dogs commercially.
What the scientists changed
Dog allergy is a reaction to proteins, not to hair itself. Can f 1 is a major allergen found in saliva, dander and hair. It can spread through a home whether a dog's coat is curly, straight, long or short, which is why low-shedding breeds are not automatically non-allergenic.
The team edited cells so they would not produce Can f 1, then transferred the edited genetic code into eggs carried by a surrogate beagle. Testing later found no detectable Can f 1 in Bailey and Alfie's sampled saliva and hair. The edit resembles a rare variant that can occur naturally in dogs, according to the researchers.
Why 'hypoallergenic' is still a difficult word
Can f 1 is important, but it is not the only dog allergen. Different people can react to different proteins and with different severity. Removing one major trigger could reduce reactions for many people without making every edited dog harmless to every allergy sufferer.
The published demonstration also involved one allergic person and two edited dogs. Larger independent tests would need to include people with varied allergy profiles, compare exposure over time and measure real symptoms rather than relying on a single laboratory-style skin response.
The long-term health question
Bailey and Alfie have reportedly grown normally and receive regular veterinary monitoring. That is encouraging, but they are young. A genetic change intended to last for life—and potentially pass to later generations—requires long observation for effects that may not appear in puppyhood.
Researchers will also need to examine whether suppressing Can f 1 has any biological consequence for the dog. A protein's role may be incompletely understood even when animals carrying a natural variant appear healthy. The production process, pregnancy outcomes and animals that did not result in live, healthy puppies belong in the welfare assessment too.
From two beagles to an available pet is a long road
The company hopes the edited animals could found future lines rather than requiring every puppy to be produced through cloning. Before that becomes a consumer proposition, the work would face scientific replication, welfare scrutiny, regulation, breeding questions and the practical cost of producing and monitoring the animals.
It also creates a social question. Bioethicists have warned that engineered allergy-friendly dogs could draw some homes away from rescue animals. That does not invalidate the potential benefit to people otherwise unable to live with dogs, but it means the effect on already crowded shelters should not be treated as somebody else's problem.
What allergy sufferers should take from the study
This research does not put an allergy-free puppy on sale tomorrow, and it does not change medical advice for somebody considering a dog now. Anyone with significant allergies should discuss exposure and management with a qualified clinician rather than testing themselves through an informal visit to a breeder.
The achievement is specific and substantial: two living dogs were produced without detectable levels of a major allergen in the samples reported. Everything beyond that—broad effectiveness, lifelong health, ethical production and ordinary availability—remains the next experiment, not the conclusion.
