Danielle Marshall's lockdown dog Luna inspires GB sled-racing debut

Getting a dog during lockdown changed Danielle Marshall's exercise routine rather more than she expected. Luna, the husky cross who joined her household in 2020, helped set her on a path from running together to representing Great Britain in sled-dog sport, according to a new BBC interview.
The Worksop owner is preparing for her first international competition in Sweden this month. Her sport is dryland mushing: dogs pull a wheeled scooter or racing rig along a trail, rather than a sled across snow. The human is a teammate, not a passenger on a woodland taxi.
The BBC's report, published on 4 October, introduces an owner whose pets have become sporting partners. With the European championships approaching, the useful questions are what she is entering, how the racing works and where Luna fits into a team whose competition rules do not include every dog in every event.
The dog who started it
In David Pittam's BBC interview, Marshall describes finding an outlet for Luna's energy through canicross — running with a dog attached to the runner's waist. A taster session with a dog team and wheeled rig then drew her further into the sport.
The distinction between starting the story and entering every race matters. The BBC reports that Luna still trains with the other dogs but cannot compete in all events because she is not a pedigree. Luna's part in the journey should not be mistaken for confirmation that she will race in each European class.
Two kinds of teamwork on wheels
Marshall is preparing for two-dog scooter and four-dog rig racing, the BBC reports. In her scooter class, the athlete works with two dogs; a rig class uses a purpose-built wheeled vehicle and team. These are separate competitions, with their own courses and results.
The official IFSS categories and distances put the women's two-dog scooter course at approximately 5.5 kilometres and the four-dog rig course at approximately 4.5 kilometres. The organiser explicitly says distances may be adjusted, so those figures describe the current plan rather than an unchangeable race-day measurement.
That page also specifies two heats for each class, except the relay. A promising run is only part of the contest: the competition is organised across repeated efforts, rather than one dash with a finish-line photograph.
A European stage, with dates to check
The Gävle host's event page confirms that the IFSS European Championships and European Masters Dryland 2026 are taking place at Skidstavallen in Gävle, Sweden, from 14–18 October.
Visit Gävle's visitor listing separates the opening ceremony on 14 October from competition on 15–18 October. It describes an expected field of more than 650 competitors from over 20 countries — an event forecast, not a count of athletes who have already started.
The provisional IFSS programme places the women's two-dog scooter heats on 15 and 16 October, and four-dog rig heats on 17 and 18 October. It warns that this is not the final class start order. For anyone following Marshall's progress, those class dates are more informative than treating the whole championship week as one race.
Pets first, results still to come
The BBC attributes Marshall's qualification to silver medals at the British Sleddog Sports Federation's 2025–26 national championships. Her international debut is still ahead; the fresh news is her preparation and account of how she reached it, not a European result.
She describes the dogs to the broadcaster as “first and foremost” her pets. That is the thread connecting Luna's arrival with the Swedish start line: a shared activity grew into organised competition, while the animals remained members of the household.
For now, readers can check the organisers' programme and follow the competition when it begins. Luna has already supplied the opening chapter. The next belongs to the dogs and athlete on the trail.
